On 24th March 1945, 16,000 paratroops and glider-borne infantry flew from Earls Colne and other Essex airfields on Operation Varsity - the largest airborne operation the world has ever seen - the “last drop” to cross the River Rhine and defeat Nazi Germany.
Headquartered at Marks Hall, just ONE woman, Flight Officer Rosemary Britten WAAF, was accompanying these men. Come hear the incredible story of her flight on Halifax D-Dog.
The SAS “rogue heroes” weren’t going to be left out of it - leaving their bases here in Essex in 1945, they operated miles behind the German lines with incredible bravery - and were the first Allied troops to reach the Belsen concentration camp.
